Finnish Museum of Technology: a successful partnership with Northeast Flow enables savings and lowers emissions
The Finnish Museum of Technology, Northeast Flow’s first customer and technical pilot partner, has decided to triple the digital heat capacity at the museum.
When Northeast Flow first approached the Finnish Museum of Technology (Museum), the Museum was facing a challenge. Heating costs had steadily climbed over the past decade. And at the same time the Museum sought to be a pioneer in leveraging new innovations, particularly when it came to lowering emissions. At the time, we at Northeast Flow had come up with a concept of a novel heating method which would utilise the excess heat from high performance computation. Our product vision convinced the Museum and from this emerged a partnership with the shared goal of emission reductions as well as cost savings.
“When we were developing our technical pilot, we learned a great deal about how our system works alongside other heating methods. Especially how it works together with district heating, as this is the primary heating method at the Museum. And how we can best help optimize heating costs when operating alongside such heating methods. The Museum was a great piloting partner also from the point of view of having other unique needs, such as keeping the inside temperature stable due to sensitive museum items.” comments Peetu Korkeila, Northeast Flow's COO.
Savings and reduced emission goals have been reached as well during the past two years of technology piloting. Museum has thus far reached ca. €2,500 total savings thanks to our digital heat servers. At the same time we have successfully reduced the Museum’s carbon dioxide emissions by eight tons. This is thanks to us producing the heat as a byproduct of running our servers as well as using fossil fuel free electricity. In the future, we will continue to work together with the Museum and produce up to one third of the annual heating requirement.
“Cooperation with Northeast Flow has been straightforward. For us at the Museum it has been important that the cost structure in the service is transparent and easily understandable without compromising our ability to reach reduced emissions. And the service checks both of these.”

The Museum has been and continues to be an important client and partner for us at Northeast Flow. Without the learnings that we’ve been able to get from working together with the Museum we wouldn’t be at the stage where we are now. With a product that’s ready for the market with thousands of hours of operative data demonstrating its functionality.
